Virtual Single PBX System

By Mike Dailey

New networking technologies and telephone systems are providing the ability for organizations with many small locations in one city or county geographic location to be networked together providing a "virtual PBX system." Schools and banking operations that typically use small key systems with Centrex or analog lines at each location are excellent customers for this technology.

Some of the advantages of the virtual single PBX systems include:

  1. A common telephone numbering plan for all locations with four or five digit dialing between locations.
  2. A single shared, fully redundant voice mail system to provide voice mail, auto attendant and multimedia features for all locations.
  3. Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) functions that can be distributed to any location in the network.
  4. Shared central digital ISDN trunking to provide advanced features, e.g. Caller ID and Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) to all locations. The geographic location of sites must be considered to prevent any negative impact on the toll free calling areas.
  5. Calling name and number display of calls made between locations.
  6. Increased number of local dial tone call paths to each location for improved service.
  7. Direct Inward Dialing (DID) to any telephone location in the network (eliminate the old line for number arraignment).
  8. Seamless transferring of calls between any location.
  9. Shared central digital connections to long distance carriers for reduced on-net calling cost for all locations rather than the switch access cost usually used at small key system locations.
  10. Shared central call accounting system to manage calling.
  11. Centralized administration of the many sites as one telephone system.
  12. Eliminate old key system technology and provide PBX features to each location.
  13. Eliminate Centrex lines and reduce cost of local dial tone.
  14. E911 service for each location.
  15. The virtual single PBX system concept can be used for locations that are widely dispersed to reduce long distance calling cost between office locations. Local trunks must be provisioned at each location for local calls.
